WEBB

NOTE: This family does NOT appear to be related to the Richmond/Webbe Family of Draycott, Wiltshire, which is in the north end of the county, while Salisbury is in the south.  Alternate dates in red are from a book found at the Society of Genealogists in London in May, 2011: Descendants of William Webbe (c1466-1523) Researched by Richard J Cornwell between 2003 and 2006. I do not know that they are any better or worse estimates than those I had originally. They do indicate a shorter lifespan, as expected in the 15-17th centuries, although in rare cases, people did live to advanced age.

William Webbe alias Killihoe or Kellowe (c14251466-1523) was christened in the church of St Lawrence at Shaftesbury, Dorset, though his parentage is unknown. His alias hints of a possible relationship to Robert Keilway I of Dorset.  Shaftesbury is on the border of Wiltshire, about 20 miles west of Salisbury.   He married Joan Ewen, widow Stone.  He married secondly, after 1517, Edith, widow of Robert Long, of Steeple Ashton, and of one Morgan; and third, after 1520, Joan Willington, who also preceded him in death.  He was a prosperous cloth merchant in Salisbury, and served as Constable of New Sarum (Salisbury) 1488, Mayor 1495, 1512, 1514, 1522; member of Parliament 1504 and 1510.  He made his will 13 July 1523, and it was proved 14 Aug 1523.

Obviously, Mr. Cornwell's research complicates the majority of the on-line genealogies, first by not listing Mary Webb (later Hudnall) at all in this family; and second, by estimating birth years that cannot fit the timeline of Thomas Webb and Mary Webb Hudnall in Northumberland County, Virginia.  But since neither his nor the on-line genealogies cite sources for the birth years, except John Webbe in 1530/32, we will have to search Parish baptismal records.  The records of Odstock began in 1541, but are available only on microfiche, and reportedly "few entries are readable."  The records at St Thomas' in Salisbury seem to date from 1530, and may be in better shape.  I hope to be able to check these in mid-December.  The Herald of Arms' Visitations of Wiltshire in the 1600's may also shed some light on the dates, but one would presume that Mr. Cornwell had consulted these first.
Mary Webb (1625-c1684) married John Hudnall (c.1608- 24 Aug 1658) They moved from England to Isle of Wight Co, Va, about 1645, and then before 1655 to Northumberland, Va,  Mary married in May 1660 Edward Sanders (b.10 Aug 1625), and after 1672 William Thomas (d.1678).
.
She is sometimes called Mary Partain, based upon the name of h
er second son, but she is identified as the sister of Thomas Webb
, because: . Mary Webb Hudnall Sanders Thomas apparently died in the late 1683 or January 1683/4.  On 16 Jan 1683/4, Ebenezer Sanders and Edward Sanders, sons of Mary Thomas, deceased, were made administrators of her estate; Edward White (son-in-law) and Thomas Hobson Sr (nephew) were additional sureties. (Northumberland County Court Order Book 1678-1699, p.211)  Thomas Hobson Sr married Sarah Webb, daughter of Thomas Webb, who died about 1659 in Northumberland County, Virginia.
.
On 20 Nov 1662, Edward Sanders gave cows to his step children, Henry, Mary, and Elizabeth, who were underage (Northumberland County Record Book 1658-1662, p.83) and on 29 Dec 1671, he assigned his interest in an indentured servant "unto my Sonne in Law Benjamin Cottman" (Somerset County Maryland Judicial Records 1671-1675, p.98)  On 17 Sep 1684 Edward White and Benjamin Cotman sued Ebenezer and Edward Sanders, administrators of the estate of Mary Thomas, who was administrator of William Thomas, for their wives' share of her estate.   By 1684, land deeds state that Benjamin Cotman's wife was Mary.  The law suit record does not state that Elizabeth was deceased.  Another possibility, allowed by the wording of the record of the suit, is that Benjamin married Mary Hudnall and Edward White married Elizabeth Hudnall.  Research is needed on Edward White.
