Liptrap - Trapp

Around 1800, one family of Liptraps in Wendover, Buckinghamshire, changed their name to Trapp.

Some of the descendants of this family moved to Canada in 1872, and acquired along the way a silver pitcher bearing the crest of the Trappes- Lomax Family of Chatburn, Lancashire, with the motto "Faithful in honouring my ancestors."  Persistent attempts, over the last 60+ years,  to connect their family to the Trappes have been unproductive, thus far.  Note:  a coat of arms is the shield-shaped device granted by a monarch.  The crest is the ornamentation often displayed above and around the coat of arms, including the family motto.  The Arms are passed only to the single direct male heir each generation, but it would be appropriate for other descendants to have the crest without the arms.

Thomas Trappes-Byrnand, Esq (1832-1891) of Stanley House, Clitheroe, Lancaster, a descendant of Stephen Trappes (died c.1485), married in 1866 Helen, daughter of Thomas Lomax, and the name was compounded for her descendants in 1891 as a condition for her to inherit from the Lomax estate.  Since this was after Thomas Trapp's departure from England, we can assume that the crest belonged to the Trappes, possibly as far back as Stephen.  See Burkes Landed Gentry.
(1) Thomas Leaptrapp of Wendover, Buckinghamshire, married about 1678 Mary, who was buried 19 Feb 1684/5. He then married 2 Nov 1686 Elizabeth Phillis.  Elizabeth Liptrap was buried 30 Jul 1731, and "Old Thomas Liptrap" was buried 3 Dec 1732, both at Wendover.  Ten children were christened at St Mary the Virgin, Wendover:
. . 1. John Leaptrap (13 Jul 1679-before Sept 1723) married Mary, probably the family of Chesham,
. . . . .Bucks, see (2) below
. . 2. Thomas Leaptrap (13 Feb 1680-14 Nov 1719) married 2 Jan 1710/11 Mary Horton at St
. . . . .Dunstan in the East.  He was apprenticed 2 November 1703 to Peter Horton, cartman.  Three
. . . . .children were christened at All Hallows the Great 1712-1718, apparently then returned to
. . . . .Chesham Bois, Bucks, where he was buried 14 Nov 1719.  Progenitor of the Whiskey Distilling

. . . . Joseph Liptrap buried 20 Feb 1742 at St Giles Cripplegate, London

. Thomas Liptrap, born 4 Mar 1711
. Children of "widow Liptrap," were baptized 12 Sep 1723, Chesham, Bucks,

. Parish Register.
. Mary Liptrap married 5 Nov 1727 Henry Horwood, at Hughenden, Bucks
. Sarah Liptrap married 21 Jan 1749 John Gillham, at Chesham, Bucks

(3) Nothing has yet been found concerning John (1707) or Thomas (1711) or the other children of "widow Liptrap."  However, it is possible but unproven that John (1707) may have been the father of John (c1740) below, and Thomas (1711) may have been the same as the Thomas Liptrap (d.1792) of Waltham Abbey, father of Isaac Liptrap of Virginia.  Descendants of John (1740) and Isaac (1750) have tested at 66 out of 67 DNA markers, indicating a 92% probability of being descended from a common ancestor within 7 generations, which would be the father of this generation, John (1679).  More research is needed to find the documentation and the details.

(4) John Liptrap (born about 1740) married 3 Feb 1772 Alice Caudery, at Wendover, married by the Banns, witnesses George and Mary Hoare.  Alice was buried 3 Mar 1809.  John was buried 29 Apr 1812.  Alice Caudry was baptised at Wendover 10 Feb 1744, daughter of Thomas Cawdry.and Leuce (Lucy) Durrant, who were married 4 Jan 1734 at Wendover.  Thomas and Lucy had two other children baptised at Wendover, Grace 15 Sep 1751, and Robert 20 May 1759.
