PENDARVIS

Some of the information below is from research compiled by John W Lawrence, Certified Genealogist, Columbia, SC, 1989, Manuscript in South Caroliniana Library, University of South Carolina, Columbia.
Joseph Pendarvis
was probably born about 1645 in Cornwall, England, home of the Pendarvis Family, although he does not fit into the heraldic family of that name. There is no evidence to suggest that he was the son or grandson of Alexander Pendarvis (d.1628) and Alice Humphrey.
He was apparently sent to Barbados or Bermuda about 1669, then sailed to the new port of Charles Town in Carolina, arriving on the Blessing 14 Aug 1671.  No record of him has been found in Barbados, but he was not listed aboard the Blessing when it left England, and it stopped in Barbados before continuing on to Charles Town.  He married, soon after arrival, Elizabeth, whose maiden name and first husband's name are unknown. She and her daughter Priscilla, arrived in the "First Fleet" of 1670, but not aboard the Carolina, whose passengers are known. They were married prior to July 26, 1672, when Joseph received land based upon Elizabeth's arrival in the First Fleet.
[Note: An Elizabeth Stonehall arrived on the Blessing, and like Joseph, was a servant, employee, or dependent of Thomas Hurt. She could not have been Joseph's wife, as she would not have been entitled to receive land as a member of the First Fleet.]
Joseph received 250 acres of land at Oyster Point. In 1682 he received Town Lot No. 66 at Charlestown. He was one of the receivers of funds raised for an expedition from Carolina against the Spaniards at St. Augustine, October 1686. He was elected to the Colonial Assembly in January 1693. His will was made 19 Nov 1694 and proved 10 Jan 1694/5.

John Pendarvis was born about 1673, and died 14 Feb 1724/5. His will dated 15 Sep 1719 was witnessed by John Brand, and left land on Green's and Spoon's Savanna to his son Joseph. He married about 1697 Mary West, daughter of Samuel West; she died before September 1719. He then married 13 May 1721 Hannah Goring, widow of John Keys. After John's death, Hannah married 26 Sep 1725 Joseph Hasfort. John acquired 1,500 acres of land in Colleton County, and served in the ninth Assembly of the Commons House. He was dismissed in 1722 by the Charles Town Meeting of the Society of Friends (Quakers)

Joseph Pendarvis (c.1699-1736) of St Philip's Pr, Berkeley County, SC; owned 1009 acres in Colleton County near Green's Savannah and a plantation on Charlestown Neck. Joseph never married, but his will, dated 11 Feb 1735/6, proved 17 Mar 1735/6, named his seven "children of a Negro woman named Parthena, deceased, that lived with me." The inventory of his father's estate, 1724, lists "Negro woman Pothenia and child." Joseph manumitted her and her children 8 Mar 1734/5, less than a year before her death. An old family story speaks of an unspecified seafaring father taking his son to the Caribbean to teach him how to be a man. The son found the women of the islands very beautiful, had his father buy one for him, and brought her home.  A recent mitochondrial DNA test of a direct female descendant matched to the Kanuri people of northeastern Nigeria.
