LAYMAN

Peter Lehman was a Mennonite refugee from Switzerland who arrived in America 24 Aug 1717, and settled in Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He died in April, 1741. He had two known sons:

1. Alexander Lehman died as a young man
2. John Lehman "The Hunter" frequently struck off for the Valley of Virginia, visiting the Warm Springs and Cresap's Stone Fort. He had many friendly dealings with the Indians, and spoke their languages fluently. He settled in Frederick Co, MD, and was a road overseer by 1750.
0. Benjamin Layman was quite similar to John Lehman, although no written evidence has yet been found to connect Benjamin to John or Peter, although Peter's land in Lancaster County was very close to John Baughman's

John Baughman (d.1763) lived in Hempfield Twp, Lancaster Co, PA, at least as early as 1741. In 1751, he bought 1499 acres west of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River in Virginia. His daughters married Pennsylvania neighbors and settled in this area of Virginia. The relation between John Baughman and Henry Baughman, is unknown

Benjamin Layman (c.1723 - 1788) married first in 1747 to Barbara Baughman (c.1726-1782) daughter of John Baughman. They moved to what is now Shenandoah County, Virginia. After Barbara died, Benjamin married Catherine (c.1726 - 31 Oct 1788) Benjamin made his will on 9 January 1787, and it was proved 28 Feb 1788.
