HAMMAN Johannes Hammann (d.22 Apr 1686) and his wife Anna (d.7 Jun 1691) lived in Lachen, fifteen miles west of Speyer on the Rhine after the Thirty Years War. Five of their children appear in the records of the Reformed Church at Lachen-Speyerdorf. Several families of Hammann's lived in Lachen at that time, and several older Hammanns died (Peter, died in 1688, age 84; Otillie, widow of Hans died in 1689, age 85; Paul Hammann of Duttweiler, son of Diebold, deceased, was married in 1671) but the records do not indicate any relationship between them. Johann Jacob Hammann was born at Lachen 18 Apr 1706, and confirmed at Easter 1721. He was married 24 Jun 1732 at Duttweiler to Anna Margaretha Klamm. (b. 8 Sep 1711) daughter of Stephan Klemm. There was a Jacob Hamman who arrived in Philadelphia on the Edinburgh on 15 Sep 1749, but evidence suggests that was a Jacob Hamman in a group from Ruschberg near Baumholder. But our Jacob did arrive about that time, possibly in company of his cousin Georg Meess. But Jacob settled in Lancaster Co, PA, by the fall of 1750, and appears on the tax list of Cocalico Township in 1751. Anna Margaretha apparently died about 1753, as Jacob and new wife Maria Dorothea appear in Hannover, York County, in 1755. |

Johann Paul Hammann was born in Lachen 8 Aug 1745, emigrated with his parents in 1749, and lived in Frederick (now Washington) County,Maryland, with his brothers until after he married Veronica "Franey" Groh about 1775. The first record of him in Shenandoah County is in 1783. He died in late spring 1789. Franey was the daughter of Matthias Groh, Sr (d.1771) and Anna Groff of Lebanon Co, Pennsylvania. She was born about 1755, remarried to Christopher Lindamood, and died about 1832. |
