TYNES

Various legends tell different stories about the origins of the Tynes Family. See Mark James' thorough analysis at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tmark/Tynes.html. Whatever relation we may have to Scottish Chieftains, exiles under Cromwell, families in Bermuda, Barbados, Isle of Wight, Virginia, or Halifax, Virginia, we have only thus far established a connection to William Tines and his father-in-law Richard Davis of Caroline County, Virginia, Richard from the county's founding in 1727, and William from a debt action in 1741. They moved from there about 1758 to settle in Granville County, North Carolina. Richard wrote his will in June 1760, naming his daughter "Patien Toyns." William was granted 700 acres on Michaels Creek 8 Dec 1760, which was surveyed 27 Jul 1761 for his widow "Patience Tines." Sons Samuel and John, minor orphans, chose as their guardian a neighbor Michael Satterwhite, who served in that capacity until at least 18 Jan 1770.

William Tynes (d.1761) married Patience Davis, daughter of Richard Davis.  Apparently connected to, or an admirer of, Virginia politician Robert Fleming.
. 1. William Tynes married 4 Apr 1778 Levinah Davis, his cousin, died in Camden Dist, SC, 1782
. 2. Jeriah Tynes married John Jennings, and died in 1836. Her son Tyra Jennings (1765-1836) came
. . . .to visit the Tynes families in Mississippi about 1823, hinting at an inheritance since he had no
. . . .children. Tyra Jennings Tynes, son of John Fleming Tynes, was named for him.
. 3. Samuel Tynes, served in the Granville Militia in 1771,  lived in Sumter District SC until after the
. . . .Revolutionary War, in which he was a prominent Tory colonel.  He is supposed to have then
. . . .moved to Lancaster Co, SC; and then he, or his descendants, moved to Halifax Co, VA.
. 4. John Tynes apparently lived in Long Cane, 96 District, SC, as early as 1771, and served in the
. . . .Tory Long Cane Militia in 1780. No further record has been found.
. 5. Robert Fleming Tynes (c.1750-1829) served in the Patriot forces and settled in Sumter District,
. . . .SC, moving to Louisiana about 1810.  He married a daughter of Uriah Watkins.
. 6. Elizabeth Tynes is said to have married Uriah Watkins. His unnamed daughter by a previous
. . . marriage then married Robert Fleming Tynes. No record of any Uriah Watkins has been located.
. 7. Other daughters are supposed to have married Collins, Perkins, and Brumfield.

Robert Fleming Tynes (c1750-1829) joined a "Vallanteer Company of Horse" under Capt. Mathew Singleton in St Marks Parish of South Carolina, subject to the Council of Safety, 26 Aug 1775. His brother Samuel also signed, but soon switched sides and fought for the British.  After the war, Fleming settled in Clarendon County (Sumter District) SC, until 1804 when he sold his land and moved to Liberty County, Georgia, and from there about 1809/1810 to Louisiana, settling in the area of East Feliciana Parish, where he died about 1829.  His estate went to probate 20 Jan 1830 in East Feliciana (file 367) but no record of settlement has survived.
Fleming married first a daughter of Uriah Watkins.
The (Petty)Poole Family of descendants maintain her name was Anna Melissa Watkins (b.1758) daughter of Uriah Watkins and Melissa Tynes, sister of Fleming, but offer no records to support this claim. He (Fleming) married secondly 6 Feb 1814 in Amite Co, MS, Sylvia Boothe, widow of David Dixon She was born about 1782, remarried a Renfro, and died after 1850 in Sabine Co Texas.
