The Liptrap Family in England I have been looking for a connection between Isaac Liptrap of Virginia and the Liptrap Families in England since the 1960's. I have found nothing definite. He appears to fit as a grandson of Thomas Liptrap and Mary Horton, but I have found no evidence of such a relationship. Most of the information about English families is found in Parish Registers from the Church of England. Christenings, marriages, and burials were recorded from the 1530's to the present. Many registers have been published - most unindexed, often only the marriages. There is no overall index. Although Pallot's Marriage Index does list many marriages between 1780 and 1837. Similarly, Pallot's Baptism Index 1789-1837. Overall civil registrations of marriages began in 1837, and Census records begin in 1841. But we are trying to connect Isaac Liptrap, who was born about 1752, and left England in July, 1772. The records of the Mormon Church, called the International Genealogical Index, or IGI, list many marriages and births. But this is not an index of all such events. It is a record of the Ordinances of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which "seals" spouses to each other, and parents to children, so that these relationships may be maintained for all eternity. The genealogical accuracy of such records depends upon the thoroughness and integrity of the person submitting the supposed relatives for sealing. My perspective is that it is a good place to find clues for further research and documentation. In the following listings, I have used IGI listings only when they refer to a specific Parish record. I have tried to locate the parish register to verify each record. Genealogies published on the internet without documentation (including mine) should be viewed similarly. Rootsweb.com and Ancestry.com are good sources of such listings, often very extensive and self-contradictory. The danger of such listings, is that speculative family relations, and possible relationships presented for further verification, are often grabbed up by individuals looking for quick additions to their genealogical records. They then pass into many different family records as if they were proven relationships. I have seen several of my speculations, which I have since definitively disproven, presented as fact in multiple family files at Rootsweb. I have attempted to contact the owners of such information. They either never answer, or answer with the explanation that they "downloaded a GedCom" with that information, and see no reason to change it. A word about dates: Remember that before 1751, under the Julian Calendar, New Years day was March 26. So 25 Mar 1675 was followed the next day by 26 Mar 1676. Converting, 2 Mar 1710 "old style" became 2 Mar 1711 "new style," often shown as 2 Mar 1710/1. It should be presumed here that all dates taken from Parish Registers before 1751 are "old style." The information below comes primarily from Ancestry.com and IGI records that can be traced to specific sources, British census records, Parish Records in England, wills of Liptraps I saw at the British National Archives at Kew, Surry, in June, 2007, a letter from Robert G Liptrap of Toronto, Canada, about 1980, e-mail correspondence with his sons in July, 2007, and August 2007 e-mail from an descendant of General John Liptrap of India. There appear to be many Liptraps in various parts of England in the late 1600's and early 1700's, relationship between them unknown, as yet. By the Census of 1841, there appears to be scattered members of one family, and by 1881 only Robert A (1841-1885), from whom the Liptrap Family of Canada descends. While there are many descendants of the Liptrap Family in the United Kingdom today, none bear that surname.

Several family groups seem to have existed in the 17th and 18th Centuries. It is unknown how they might be related to each other: A. Nicholas Liptrap married in November 1574 Elizabeth Danishe (or Davenish)
in Barking, Essex,
on the Thames, just east of London. The date was given in Roman numerals,
and was smudged. But it appeared to be in the twenties. I searched
the Parish Register for burials a few years before and after, and baptisms
several years after, but found nothing. The paper had apparently darkened,
so the microfilm was dark, with poor contrast, and was also in Tudor
script. So I cannot be certain that I did not miss an entry. I did
find the burials of Thomas Clarke (October 10) and Margaret Over (October 24)
corresponding to their wills below. The wills did not indicate that they
were relatives, as they bequeathed items to various unrelated individuals. B. Richard Lyptrit of St Giles Cripplegate married 11 Apr 1602 Sara

In London: Thomas Liptrap, of the Parish of All Hallows the Great, married 2 Jan 1710/11 Mary
Horton at St Dunstan in the East. They had (at least) three children christened at All Hallows the Great.
It is POSSIBLE, but NOT PROVEN that this is the Thomas Liptrap who was born in 1680 in
Wendover, Buckingham. The following is conjecture: . . cooper. Married about 1735 Sarah (Sarbin?) Possible father of: . 11. Thomas Liptrap of Laleham, Middlesex, wrote his will 23 Nov 1782, naming his father Thomas . . . . Liptrap, daughters Sarah and the late Margaret Rawford, brother Charles Liptrap, sister Ann . . . . Colloy, widow, brothers-in-law Charles Ballard and Edward Dowling, and his uncle Robert Sarbin . . . . He was buried 4 Dec 1782 at All Saints, Laleham, Middlesex, described as a servant. . 12. Samuel Davey Liptrap 1743-1789, married 1 Jan 1765 Sarah Earle. His will named his mother . . . . . Sarah and sister Ann Colloy, widow. See below . 13. Charles Liptrap . 14. John Liptrap . 15. Daughter, wife of Edward Dowling . 16. Sarah Liptrap married 18 Dec 1770 Charles Ballard at St James Westminster, London . 17. Ann Liptrap married 13 Feb 1770 Thomas Colley, at St Savior, Southwark, Surrey 2. Sarah Liptrap (29 Jan 1715/6) at All Hallows the Great 3. Mary Liptrap (4 May 1718) 4. John Liptrap Isaac Liptrap (1749-1819), who was sent to Virginia in 1772, appears to fit into this family somehow. He was the son of Thomas and Jane Liptrap, and baptized at Waltham Abbey, Essex. At Isaac's trial, a John Liptrap and a Ballard, whose first name was not given, testified in his behalf, though no relationship was recorded. Other witnesses John Allen, butcher at Red-lion-street, Whitechapel, and John Dutton, wharfinger at Ralph's Key, claimed to have known Isaac in his childhood when he lived with their families. But Thomas #1 was married to Sarah when Samuel was born about 1743, and she was still alive in 1789 when Samuel wrote his will. A Sarah Liptrap, age 66, was baptized 15 Jan 1773 at St Leonard's Shoreditch. She would have been born in 1706. She was apparently the same Sarah Liptrap, age 89, of Barking, Essex, who was buried 15 Nov 1795 at Whitechapel, Middlesex. There is NO evidence that she might have been the wife of Thomas (born 1711), but I have no other suggestion, at this time, of who she might have been. There was also a Thomas Liptrap, wife Sarah, who had
children baptized in Westminster. It is POSSIBLE that Mary died and Thomas remarried Sarah before 1725 and had more children.
Or this could be yet another Thomas Liptrap. Note also the repeat of the
name Thomas. But this Thomas apparently died about 1735, as a Sarah
Liptrap married Roger Henson 16 Sep 1736 in Westminster. Long-shots: Thomas Liptrap, son of John, married 26 Feb 1837 Anne Allem at St Giles, Camberwell,
Southwark, Surry, and had the following children christened at St George
in the East, Stepney
12. Samuel David Liptrap (1743-1789) married 1 Jan 1765 Sarah Earle, Stepney St Mary Whitechapel Samuel Davey Liptrap of the parish of St Dunstan's Stepney, was buried at 2 Aug 1789 at St Mary Whitechapel, age 46, having died of an inflamation. His will was proven 26 Aug 1789, mentioned his mother Sarah, his wife Sarah, his deceased daughter Sally, son John, son Samuel Davy when he attains the age of 21, daughter Ann, "all my other children," and sister Ann Colloy, widow. The will refers to land in Middlesex and capital of £30,000. He was listed at a malt distiller in Whitechapel Road in city directories from 1770 until 1789. This listing was "S D Liptrap & Son" after John became old enough. At least until 1797, John and Samuel Davy (Jr) were both listed in this profession.. 121. John Liptrap (1 Jan 1766 - 17 May 1826) at baptism, lived at Ducking Pond. . 122. Sarah Liptrap (30 Aug 1767-26 Dec 1784) at burial, lived at Ducking Pond. . 123. Samuel Davy Liptrap (15 Feb 1773 - 1836) . 124. Ann Liptrap (9 Mar 1778) at baptism lived at Whiterow H 121. John Liptrap was a whisky distiller from 1788 to 1816, and a patron of the arts and hospital, lived in Mile End. He was the Sheriff of London and Middlesex in 1796. This was the John Liptrap for whom Mount Liptrap on Cape Liptrap in New South Wales, Australia, was named, by his friend Capt. James Grant in 1800. He was a subscriber to the Macklin Bible in 1800 [the largest Bible ever printed, measuring two feet by 16 inches, in six massive volumes weighing over 100 pounds.] This was probably the bankrupt whose art and book collections were auctioned at Sotheby's in April and May, 1804. In 1811, he lived in Bethnal Green. Bankrupt again in 1813. See continuation below. Please note, there were at least three other John Liptraps, with whom he might be confused: . . . . [John Liptrap (1768-1795) and Martha Liptrap (1788-1792) died in Richmond, Surrey] . . John Liptrap, bapt. 25 Mar 1770 at Stepney St Dunstan, son of John and Mary . . John Liptrap, bapt. 1 Nov 1772 at Wendover, Buckingham, son of John and Alice, I have no clue as to the origins of John and Anne, nor John and Mary, though they are probably sons of his uncles, listed in Thomas' will in 1782. One John Liptrap died in 1838 at Greenwich, which one, I do not know. 123. Samuel Davy Liptrap, (15 Feb 1773-1836) whisky distiller, wrote his will 3 March 1836, naming his wife Amelia (1776-1841), his daughter Amelia, and his nephew John Liptrap, oldest son of his brother John Liptrap.
Death records show Amelia Liptrap (the elder) died in December, 1841, in South Stoneham, Hampshire. 124. Ann Liptrap (9 Mar 1778) married 1797 Timothy Cassin (or Cassen or Castin) . 1242. Amelia Cassin married Elijah Williams . 1243. Samuel Davy Liptrap Cassin . 1244. John Porter Cassin (d.1844) daughters Eliza Ann Porter Castin and Ada Elizabeth Castin.
121. John Liptrap (1 Jan 1766 - 17 May 1826) widower, married 14 Jan 1790 Elizabeth Hunt (1765-1843) daughter of James Hunt. Married at Harefield, Middlesex. John died at Canterbury, Kent; Elizabeth died at Dartford, Kent. They had six known children.. 1211. Elizabeth Stephens Liptrap (1 Feb 1791) bapt. 22 Mar 1791 St Dunstan Stepney . 1212. Mary Anne Liptrapp (27 Jun 1794) bapt. 5 Aug 1794 St Dunstan Stepney . 1213. John Liptrap (15 Apr 1796 - 21 Sep 1878) bapt. 21 Jun 1796 St Dunstan, Stepney . 1214. Amelia Caroline Liptrap (1799-1857) bapt. 12 Apr 1799 Dunstan, Stepney . 1215. Samuel Davy Liptrap (1800-13 Jul 1802) bapt. 11 Oct 1800 in St Dunstan, Stepney . 1216. Samuel Davey Liptrap (21 Feb 1803-1877) bapt. 28 Jul 1803 in St Dunstan, Stepney 1212. Mary Anne Liptrapp (27 Jun 1794) married 23 May 1818 Henry Anderson Tydd at St Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London 1213. General John Liptrap (1796-1878), born at Mile End, of the Bengal Army, lived at St Mary's, Chettenham, Middlesex in 1871, the first census in which he appears. This would have been the "Captain Liptrap" referred to in George Hinty's fictional novel about the 1857 Indian Mutiny, In Times of Peril, A Tale of India. He joined the Bengal Army in 1817, and was Captain from 1831 to 1850. As Lieutenant Colonel in 1857, he four times brought back men of the 45th Native Infantry when they had mutinied. He was promoted to Major General 22 Aug 1865, and to General 1 Oct 1877. He died at Kensington, London 21 Sep 1878. He married three times and had one daughter. He married first Maria Perigoe, 1 Sep 1823 at St John's, Calcutta, India. She was born in 1792 and died 14 June 1838 in Bath, Somerset. He married secondly 27 Aug 1842 at Marylebone, to Eliza Jell, daughter of William Jell, and widow of William Cook Wallace, she died 26 Feb 1850 in Surbiton, Surrey. He married thirdly 2 Jan. 1854 in Calcutta, India, Emma Jell, daughter of William Jell, and widow of A W Nash. She was born in 1814 and died 30 July 1877 in Ramsgate, Kent. He had three step children, Dr William Nash, Charles Nash, and Jessie Nash, wife of H M Cadell.. 12131. Blanche Emma Liptrap was born 2 Feb 1856 in Ferozepore N.W. Frontier, India. She died 19 May 1920 and is buried at Melbury Abbas, Dorset. She was educated at the Cheltenham Ladies' College. 1214. Amelia Caroline Liptrap (10 Jan 1799-1857), according to her will written 30 Aug 1842, which was proved 17 Feb 1857, was commonly called Amelia Caroline Willcox, spinster, daughter of John and Elizabeth Liptrap. It listed her son Robert Albemarle Liptrap, alias Wilcox, with a provision for him when he reached age 21, also naming her brother Samuel Davey Liptrap and her great-aunt Laura Ruth Liptrap (identity unknown). The 1841 Census of Portsea, Hampshire, lists Amelia Willcox, 38, and Laura Kyle, 9. The 1851 Census Portsea, lists Amelia Willcox, 50; son Robert, 9; and niece Laura Kyle, 19, and she was described as an "annuitant." Another record states that Amelia Wilcox died in Bermondsey, Southwark, London, in December 1857.12121. Robert Albemarle Liptrap (1841-1885) was listed with his mother Amelia Liptrap alias Willcox in the Census of 1851. In 1861, he was listed as Robert Liptrap,19, a visitor in the house of Louisa Lankester in Bonchurch, Hampshire. He married first
30 Dec 1865 Mary (or May) Croucher (1843) at St Pancras Old Church, London; His
marriage certificate said he was a merchant living in Liverpool Street, and
gives his father's name as Robert Liptrap, deceased. They lived at Greenwich, Kent, in 1871, and his profession listed as tramway car driver.
