   ISAAC LIPTRAP's DESCENDANTS
 for Three Generations

 Revised 25 September 2011

Isaac Liptrap (1749-1819) married on July 29, 1785, in Augusta County, Virginia, to Mary Bright
(1763 -after 1850), daughter of George Adam
Bright. Their children were:
1. James Anthony Liptrap (1786-c.1871) married 10 April 1808 Elizabeth Potter (1787-c.1851), daughter of Phillip Pottorph (1757-1834) and his first wife Elizabeth. Phillip's second wife was Catherine Bright, daughter of George Adam Bright. James and Elizabeth lived in Bath County, Virginia, until 1837, when he sold possessions to satisfy debts, and moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, then about 1844 to Caldwell County, Missouri, where he appeared in the 1850 census, indexed as "Sifstraph." Elizabeth apparently died soon after, and he moved to Kansas City, where he married in 1853 Sarah (1814 KY - 16 Sep 1876), widow of Elijah Jackson, and by one account previously the widow of William Taylor.  James was the only Liptrap known to own a slave, owning one in Bath County 1817-1820. Sarah Jackson owed six when he married her, and they were listed under his name
in the Census of 1860. Sarah "Sallie" died in Holton, Kansas, 16 Sep1876. Her obituary did not mention her husband, and Jimmie probably died in Kansas City before 3 Aug 1874, when they started keeping death records. He was listed in the Census of 1870, and in the Kansas City Directory (as a gardener) in 1870, but not in 1871. Sarah ran a boarding house in Kansas City in 1870, but was living with her daughter Mary Ellen Farr in Holton in the Kansas State Census of 1875. James might have been buried in Union Cemetery in Kansas City. There is an unmarked grave in the plot in which his step-daughter Leanah Jackson Wheeler is buried (see below).
11. Elizabeth Liptrap (1807-after 1850) married 15 Dec 1829 Peter Sutton (1800-before 1850) in Bath Co. VA. Moved to Oxford Township, Butler County, Ohio, by 1830, and to Sangamon County, Illinois, by 1837. Elizabeth was living with her parents in Caldwell County, Missouri, in 1850. Peter and Elizabeth probably moved to Caldwell County in 1844 when James did, and Peter died shortly before 1850. If so, the record of his estate was lost when the Court House burned 19 Apr 1860, with loss of all records. They had 3 sons and 2 daughters by the Census of 1840, probably including:
. . 111. Columbus Sutton (1830) lived in Kansas City, MO in 1850 with the Louis Griffin family. He and
. . . . . . .Benjamin Fulcher were shown as wood cutters. No one by that name was found in 1860 or 1870.
. . 112. William Sutton (1831) lived three doors down from his grandparents in Caldwell County in 1850,
. . . . . . .age 19, with the Timothy Middaugh family. In 1860, there was a William Sutton, 28, farmer, from
. . . . . . .Illinois, living with John King in Sutter Township, Sacramento County CA, where William’s uncle
. . . . . . .Thomas was a wagoner. In 1870, he was still there, farmer age 37, with wife Mary E. and 5 year-
. . . . . . .old son Jesse. In 1880, William, farmer, 46, and Jesse, 15, boarded with William Everett in Fall
. . . . . . .River Mills, Shasta County, CA.
. . 113. Daughter Sutton (c1833) probably married in Caldwell County just before 1850.
. . 114. James Sutton, born 1834 in Ohio, He lived with his aunts Sarah Priddy and Catherine Liptrap
. . . . . . .in Kansas City, MO, in 1850. In 1860, there was a James Sutton, gold miner, 25, from Illinois,
. . . . . . .living alone in Plumas County, California (10 Jul), and another, age 23, in Placer County, living
. . . . . . .with Thomas Patton, age 45 (22 Jun). The way miners moved around, and the general accuracy
. . . . . . .of these census records, mean that these could both be the same person. But no one was found
. . . . . . .in 1870 or 1880, nation-wide, who could match to either of them.
. . 115. Delilah Sutton, born 1837 in Illinois, lived with her mother and grandparents in Caldwell Co, MO
. . . . . . .in 1850. Any marriage or further record was lost in the 1860 court house fire.
12. Thomas Liptrap (24 Jul 1810-11 May 1887) married 1845 Martha A (1810-before 1880). He moved with his father to Illinois in 1837, to Caldwell Co, Missouri about 1844, and in 1850 was listed as a wagoner in Kansas City, MO; in 1860 as a teamster in Sacramento, CA; in 1870 as a farmer in Colusa, CA . He was not listed in the California State Census of 1852. The History of Yakima says he moved to Vallejo, California, about 1852, then in 1877 to Lakeview, Oregon. In 1879 he drove his cattle to Yakima, Washington on the upper Wenas, where he opened a sawmill with Charles Longmire. Thomas earned a local reputation for his skill in handling his six mule team and two wagons, demonstrating once that he could turn his rig around in Yakima Avenue. He, his son and daughter-in-law are buried in Wenas Cemetery, Selah, Yakima Co. His only child was
. . 121. William Henry "Bill" Liptrap (1846MO-19 Feb 1919WA) married 9 Apr 1868 in Solano County,
. . . . . . .CA, Mary Anna Wilsey(1853-8 Apr 1929) and had 4 children. Bill once boasted and proved that
. . . . . . .he could drive asix horse team and two wagons through a gate and rub the gate-post with four
. . . . . . .hubs.  Thomas and Bill established a freight line between The Dalles, Oregon, and Ellensburg,
. . . . . . .Washington, displaced by the railroad in 1885. Bill built the first bridge across the Yakima
. . . . . . .River, moved to Okanogan, WA, in 1897, serving as surveyor, County Engineer, and sheriff.
