FUNKHOUSER Hans zum Vanghus leased the lands of the Benedictine monastery upstream of Trub, Canton Bern, in the Emmenthal Valley of Switzerland in 1364. The Vang or Fank was a trap for bears that threatened the peasants' livestock. The homestead near this trap was the Fankhaus (or Vanghus in older German records)Hansen zum Vanghus was born about 1370 Niklaus "Clewi" zum Fanckhuss was born about 1408, the youngest son of Hans. According to Swiss custom, he inherited the land around the Fankhaus. He was bailiff of the Trub District and died about 1476. His sons Hans and Clewi the younger quarreled over the Fankhaus, and the Abbot of the monastery divided it between them in 1495. They were the first generation to use "Fankhauser" consistently as a family name. Clewi was a citizen of Canton Berne. |
Two distinct lines have been proposed from Niklaus 1408 to Christian 1746:

He returned to Trub in March 1713 to obtain permission to emigrate to Alsace. He eventually settled 8 miles southeast of Tieffenbach, and 20 miles west of Strasburg at Neuwiller-les-Saverne. Johannes and Barbara emigrated on the Mortonhouse to Philadelphia in 1728. He took up land at the headwaters of Tumbling Run in what is now Shenandoah County, and must have died before 1737, when his sons, Johannes II, Jacob, and Christian signed a (then) Orange County petition against a wagon road proposed over the Blue Ridge at Chester's Gap. Johannes Funkhouser (II) born before 1720, died in 1765, married Barbara (called by the Bernese nickname "Bebe" in his will) who died in 1775. |

Christian Funkhouser was born on Tumbling Run in 1746. His name appears on Alexander Machir's 1775 militia list from the Strasburg area, and he did not sign the Mennonite petition against the Virginia militia laws in 1785. He was buried on his land in early 1818 (His will was made 20 May 1817 and proved 9 Mar 1818) in a family plot that his grandson had walled in 1848. Christian married 21 Jun 1774 Barbara Layman (c.1756-c.1804) and then after 1810 Catherine Stover, widow of Reuben Boehm. Christian and Barbara had 12 children: |
