Robert Coles was born about 1597-8 in Sudbury, Suffolk, and died
in 1655 in Warwick, Rhode Island. He married about 1630 Mary. She died before 1637 in Warwick,R.I. He married
about 1637 Mary Hawxhurst, daughter of Sampson
Hauxhurst/Hawkhurst.
She was born about 1602 in Nauneton, Warwickshire, and died between 1656 and 1682 in Oyster Bay, Long Island.
That he had two wives named Mary is indicated by his son John, who on 8 Dec 1655
called his father's widow "my mother-in-law." His second wife
was identified 18 Dec 1683 when his son Nathaniel participated in a transaction
in Oyster Bay with "my uncle Christopher Hoackshurst." After
Robert's death, Mary married Mathias Harvey and moved to Oyster Bay, NY where
she died. Robert came to Massachusetts Bay Colony with Governor Winthrop in 1630, and on 19 October 1630 requested to be a Freeman of Roxbury. He was made a Freeman 18 May 1631, and was member #8 of the Roxbury church. He was fined several times for intoxication. On 4 March 1633: "The court orders that Robert Coles, for drunkenness by him committed at Roxbury, shall be disenfranchised, weare about his necke and soe to hange upon his outward garment a D made of redd clothe and sett upon white; to contynue this for a yeare, and not to leave it off at any tyme when he comes amongst company, under penalty of 10 Ls. for the first offense, and V pounds for the second, and after to be punished by the court as they think meete; also he is to weare the D outwards, and in enjoyned to appear at the next general court, and to contynue thise until it be ended." With John Winthrop, Jr, he moved to Agawam (Ipswich) in 1 Apr 1633 to start the church there, to Salem in 1635, and to Providence, Rhode Island, in 1637, where he seems to have reformed in earnest and was one of the founders of the First Baptist Church along with Roger Williams and William Carpenter. On 27 Jul 1647 he and 38 others signed an agreement for a form or government. He purchased land in Pawtuxet, and on 2 Jan 1653 he sold his house and lot in Providence to Richard Pray. On 27 Feb 1653/4 he and his wife sold to Zachariah Roades for 80 pounds his interest in a dwelling house at Pawtuxet and other land he had purchased of his son-in-law Henry Townsend, and 27 Apr 1655 a meadow and 25 acres of upland to Nall. Whitman. On 28 Oct 1655, the Warwick town council met to settle his estate, since he left no will. |
